Dear Pre-Kindergarten Parents,
This week we worked with the letter Z and learned to “blend” letter sounds to make words, like "z-i-p," "z-o-o" and "z-o-o-m." We also worked with the concept of zero. On Friday the children had fun with Cinco de Mayo that included having chips with salsa. That was a big hit with the children! There will be a Family Mass on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and a Breakfast served from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Come and join us! Next week we will be working with the letter “Qq”. On Monday, please have your child bring one small item or picture of an item that begins with the “Q” sound heard in such words as Queen, quilt, quarter, quail, question, quart and quill. Thank you for the food donations to our parish Pan de Vida food pantry. We filled two boxes full. That was a very nice example of Christian Giving. Attached is a homework page with various questions I’d like your child to answer. Please help your child with the questions, then write down the answers your child gives you on the paper and return it when it’s finished. The school production of Annie will be presented on Thursday, May 31st. Tickets for this event are on sale now, before and after school, in front of the school office. There are a limited number of tickets available, so plan to get yours soon. Recently, I have noticed an increase in aggressive play and children playing rough with one another. Too many children are imitating characters and scenes they may be viewing on television, video games and movies. Please talk with your child about playing nicely and not being so rough at school. Those who take karate or tae kwon do should also be reminded that school is no place for karate chops and kicks. Thank you, Kathleen Richardson Pre-K Calendar: Sunday: Family Mass (9:00 a.m.) and Breakfast (9:00 - 11:30 a.m.). Monday: Bring “Qq” item. Friday: 12:40 dismissal. Dear Pre-Kindergarten Parents,
This week we continued working with the letter Y and reviewed some past lessons. We also learned about the “more than” and “less than” concepts. Please continue to reinforce these concepts at home using everyday things around the house. There will be NO school TOMORROW, April 20th for a teacher In-Service. There will be a Family Mass on Sunday, April 22nd at 9:00 a.m.Next week we will be working with the letter “V”. On Monday, please have your child bring one small item, or picture of an item, that begins with the “V” sound heard in such words as van, vine, violet, vase, vitamin, violin, vegetable, vest and vulture. Also on Monday have your child bring in one fresh vegetable for a science project, such as one pea pod, one cucumber, one zucchini, onecelery stalk, etc. The children are beginning to sound-out words and are eager to begin reading. However, there are certain “sight words” that they cannot sound-out and these must be learned by sight (like the word THE, for example). Attached is a page of “sight words” for your child to learn at home. Please have your child practice the first page of words, trace them and write them down. After your child has learned the first page, have him or her return it and read it to me. Once he or she has mastered the first page, I will give them the next page to learn. Re-registration is now underway for the next school year. Be sure you let the office know your intentions regarding Kindergarten so a spot can be reserved for your child. Also, there are still openings for Pre-Kindergarten, so if you know friends or family members who might be interested in our program, please have them contact the office. Thank you to all that helped make this year's Carnival a big success! Bring your Service Card to me so it can be turned in for credit. Thank you, Kathleen Richardson Pre-K Calendar: Friday, April 20: NO School. Sunday, April 22: Family Mass (9:00 a.m.) ----------- Monday: Bring “V” item (see examples above). Bring one fresh vegetable (see examples above). Friday: 12:40 dismissal. Dear Pre-Kindergarten Parents,
The children are very excited about the upcoming Carnival this weekend. Remember, there will be NO SCHOOL tomorrow (Friday). We hope you and your family come and share some family time, rides, food and fun at our Carnival this weekend. Pre-Sale ride wristbands are available now from the office at a cost of $25.00 each. These wristbands may only be used on Saturday, April 14th, from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. Please note: Wristbands are only available to those families who have already purchased their obligated Carnival tickets. Come for the rides, food and fun!! This week we worked with the letter "Y" and played “yes and no” games to learn how to spell the words YES and NO. We talked about the 4 seasons of the year and worked with the sight words: "The, I and Me." There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday due to Carnival cleanup. Next week we will not be starting a new letter, because it’s a short week. Instead, we’ll continue working with the letter “Y”. Attached are some homework pages for review with different letters the children have already learned. Please go over these with your child and aim to finish one page per day. We picked the radishes we planted and enjoyed tasting them. We can’t wait to taste the peas and carrots. The poppies are getting bigger too, but those we won’t eat! Scholastic Book orders are due by Thursday, April 19th. If you choose to order on line, please use the code "N2W6Q" so that our class gets the proper credit. Scholastic offers many good books for your child to read and by ordering these books our class also benefits. With the bonus points I am able to get some books and CDs for the classroom. Remember, reading to your child helps improve important skills, such as listening skills, attention span and language development, just to name a few. Thank you, Kathleen Richardson Pre-K Calendar: Friday, April 13: NO School. Friday, Saturday and Sunday: SJF Carnival. Monday, April 16: NO School (Carnival cleanup). Thursday: Scholastic Book orders are due. Friday: 12:40 Dismissal. Dear Pre-Kindergarten Parents,
This week we worked with the letter W and had fun learning about the importance of water in our lives and the world around us. We talked about how we use water to drink, to cook, to bathe, to swim and how firemen use water to put out fires. We used water colors and printed W words. "Wacky Wednesday" was a big success! The children loved talking about the "Wacky" clothes they wore and had fun checking out each other’s wacky outfits. Next week we will be working with the letter “Ee.” On Monday, please have your child bring an item or picture of an item that begins with the “E” sound heard in such words as egg, elephant, Elmo, eggplant, engine, escalator, elf, exit and envelope. Please do not send items with the “long E” sound, such as eel, eagle and emu. I will be doing a lesson on eggs and animals that come from eggs. I already have an ostrich egg and a chicken egg, but if anyone has any other type of egg that is unique (like a quail egg) and could bring it in to class on Monday, it would be fun to use that egg in the lesson as well. Thank you for helping your child create the beautiful eggs that are hanging up in the classroom. Stop in and see all of them. We will be having our Easter egg hunt and party on Thursday, March 29th. Thank you to those who have donated plastic eggs filled with treats thus far, but we still need more treat-filled eggs for our hunt. If anyone would like to bring in some eggs with treats inside, or would like to bring in Easter cookies for the party, please email me and let me know. Remember, treats should be small packaged treats, such as jellybeans, M&M’s, tattoos, soft candies, gummy candies, fruit snacks and stickers. Please do not bring in eggs with hard candies, nuts or candies with peanut butter fillings. Thursday is also Holy Thursday, and class will dismiss at 12:40 p.m., and there will be NO after school care that day as well. Please put $25.00 in the attached envelope, print your child’s name on the outside of the envelope, and send it in by Monday, so I can get the early order discount. The sheets and towels were sent home for laundering. Please return on Monday. On Wednesday we want to have a “Wacky Wednesday,” so I am asking for the children come to school dressed in items of clothing that do not match; like different colored socks, shirts with plaids and pants with stripes, two different styles of shoes and so forth. Girls could come wearing one ponytail with one braid. Children could wear shirts inside out and wear crazy hats. The wackier, the better! Use your imagination. Attached is a homework page with a copy of an egg. Please help your child create a very colorful and festive egg using such things as markers, chalk, sequins, stickers and jewels. Please return it next week so that I may hang it up and display it in the classroom. Be as creative as you want to be and, if you want, cut the egg out and mount it on thicker paper. The children thought the lemonade they made was the best they had ever tasted. Thank you to all the parents who brought in lemons. We also talked about the author, Dr. Seuss, and how he used a lot of rhyming words in his stories. We reviewed many of those rhyming words this week, and then made a "Cat in the Hat" in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. The children had fun at the Jog-A-Thon and some of them ran quite a few laps! Thank you for your help and donations.
